With her performance “Supramodal”, Merve Morkoç aims an inter-sensory exchange and tries to create a connection between the audience and the artist, the artist and the work and finally the audience and the work by creating both an auditory and visual impression with the sculptures surrounding her.
The performance is based on Morkoç’s curiosity about the dynamics of sculptures she made in order to experience if her perception of three-dimensional objects change when an interaction is formed with the audience.
As soon as the audience enters the space, they are confronted with the artist and the sculptures wrapped around her. While in the perception process of the sense of sight, the interaction is carried to a different dimension with the sounds assigned to the sculptures. The relationship dynamic of the artist with the sculptures provides an integrity with the interactions of the audience.
As Morkoç stated:
“Intersensory communication is much more flexible than we think. Each mode can also process data except for its own field. The tactile sense areas of the brain can integrate data from the visual and auditory areas of the brain. We see with our ears, hear with our hands and taste with our eyes.”
The dynamic formed by the naming of the motives that are connected with each other as completely foreign and other, and being perceived, understood and accepted in the process of being exposed includes us in a circle.
What situations does interaction confront us with? Is sound a driving force, or does it take on a purely attractive appearance? How much do what we hear manipulate what we see? Morkoç puts the illusions of perception in these forms of communication into a system she has created with her own experiences.
By the connection she forms through flexible boundaries, Morkoç asks the audience whether there is a “yin and yang” of perception.
