Irmak Dönmez's artistic research delves into the phenomenological body, probing how societal and cultural expectations impose distinct meanings upon it. She investigates these themes through the lenses of biopolitics, gender dynamics, and the intersections of feminist and queer theory. In her intricate and ironic compositions, she critiques the social norms related to our bodies that are enforced by hegemonic institutions, often through patriarchal mechanisms. The commodification of the body, which places femininity and sexuality at its core, becomes her focal leading. Dönmez illustrates this disconnection by deconstructing and reconfiguring the body into fragmented, hybrid, and metamorphosed forms. Utilizing ceramic as her primary medium, she transforms the body into a landscape of organic elements, with each part performing a role in a queer, self-contained ecosystem. Through these representations, she creates a space for desire, power, and identity.
